Our selection of the best AMD processors for the RTX 3070

1. AMD Ryzen 5 5600X

It’s undoubtedly our big darling! While the CPU is outpaced by other benchmarks in terms of performance, it is undoubtedly the most attractive price-performance ratio. Leveraging the full potential of the graphics card, however, this processor won’t make a hole in your budget.

Let’s see the datasheet. The Zen3 architecture reveals 6 cores, or 12 threadswith SMT (which is the equivalent of HyperThreading at Intel). Thus, the CPU displays 3.7 GHz to the counter for the base frequency, which can be boosted to 4.6 GHz in Turbo mode .

In fact, performance is undeniable. When it comes to gaming, you can easily gamer in resolutions higher than full HD, without sacrificing (too much) the FPS. WQHD and4K reach out to you! The manufacturer provides different modes depending on your activities, among which is the “game” mode. Here it is clearly a question of performance , and the results are up to expectations. Only catch: it happens that gaming mode does not start at the same time as the game. If you want to enable it, you will need to restart the computer so that the change is taken into account. A small frustration, fortunately quite rare.

Also in application, the processor is doing well, even if this is not a novelty as AMD is well illustrated on this point. However, it will not be necessary to solicit too far as multi-tasking is concerned. Indeed, its limited number of cores compared to 5800X and 5900X leaves it a bit on the key when it comes to managing multiple cores.

The :

  • Excellent price-performance ratio
  • Good gaming and application performance
  • Controlled TDP

The —:

  • Sometimes game mode does not start

2. AMD Ryzen 9 5900X

From a higher range than the previous one, however, this processor is second, because its price is otherwise higher. However, it remains justified in view of the performance of the beast. Its 12 cores and 24 threads make it a particularly versatile CPU, as gifted in the game as it is in application. It displays a base clock rate of 3.70 GHz and a turbo at 4.80 GHz (4.50 GHz for all cores).

The processor leads a heavy competition with Intel’s references. It substitutes for example the i7-10700K on all points, application as a game. This, even though prices remain very similar. The different benchmarks place this processor in 5th position in terms of speed, where Intel’s reference reaches 9th place.

It should be recognized that, as with the previous model, excellence in application is no surprise for AMD. But the most surprising is how the manufacturer with a red logo even manages to exceed Intel in games. Just realize: it equalizes the performance of the Intel Core i9 10900k on Battlefield V, Borderlands3, or GearsV, and achieves even to overtake it on Civilization IV . How is it amazing? Because the i9 is sold around 150 euros more expensive than the reference of AMD…

No doubt: with

The :

  • Stunning in-game and application performance
  • Virtually Flawless Zen3 Architecture
  • High number of cores; HyperThreading technology
  • Good value for money compared to the competition…

The —:

  • … but still remains an investment
  • Once again, the game mode does not start systematically

3. AMD Ryzen 7 3700X

AMD’s 3xxx series is certainly one of its best-selling, and we understand why: the value for money is systematically put in the spotlight. This is even more true for this CPU below 300 euros. For the pricing level, it already displays a very interesting datasheet, namely 8 cores (16 threads), for a base clock rate of 3.6 GHz ( 4.4 GHz in boost mode ).

In terms of benchmarks, this AMD benchmark yields very comparable results to the i5 10600K — except that it is slightly more expensive. You will therefore enjoy equivalent in-game performance at a reduced price AND you will enjoy a higher processing speed for the application (especially video editing and 3D animation ). For comparison, it almost manages, in application, to match the performance of a Core i9 9900K, for an otherwise more attractive price.

The :

  • One price very interesting
  • Versatile processor: good in games and applications
  • Power Consumption Contained

The —:

  • Intel still keeps hands for pure gaming

Which Intel processor to choose for the RTX 3070?

1. Intel Core i7

Features & ReviewsView On Amazon

Now let’s come to the competitor of AMD, the historical leader in the middle. While competing, Intel does not fail to seduce its afficionados thanks to products known for their durability and performance. The i7 10700K does not deviate from the rule, and although abused by the Ryzen 9 5900X, this does not prevent it from excelling. Its in-game performance is quite convincing: in full HD with maximum graphics, count about 140 FPS on Far Cry 5, 102 FPS on Assassin’s Creed Origins and just over 52 FPS for Ashes of Singularity: Escalation . In fact, performance remains very close to other (but more expensive) Intel processors, such as the i9 10900K and the i9 9900K.

In application, the result is generally good , although this time the two previously mentioned Intel references largely override it. Software such as CineBench, Fire Strike and 7-Zip put it in the middle of the ranking among thirty high-performance processors. It should be noted that overclocking, however, offers great opportunities for improvements. It can then exceed the performance of a Ryzen 7 3700X or, more slightly, an i9-9900K.

The :

  • Versatile use
  • Reasonable power consumption
  • Rather good in application
  • Very good for games…

The —:

  • … despite competition from other cheaper models
  • Fineness of engraving in half-mast

2. Intel Core i5-10600K

Features & ReviewsView On Amazon

It is certainly not a new generation, but the i5 in question achieves great prowess when coupled with the RTX 3070. The Comet Lake architecture is still in the game, counting on 6 cores (12 threads), for a maximum boosted clock rate of 4.8 GHz .

Obviously, in game, you can expect prowess from it. With up to 1080p graphics, you can count on an average of 135 FPS on Far Cry 5 or 140 FPS in Fallout 4 . For even more greedy games, such as Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation , Intel confirms its (relative) advanced on AMD. The i5-10600K thus achieves the performance of a Ryzen 7 3700X and Ryzen 9 3950X. Count about 47 FPS on average for the game in question.

While the application is correct, Intel is lagging behind. For example, after testing on Cinebench R15 , the processor is exceeded by its Ryzen 7 equivalents, and even Ryzen 5 for the 3600X. In fact, give preference to this processor if you want to indulge in gaming only. For versatile use, it is better to give preference to AMD.

The :

  • Very good in games
  • Correct in application…

The —:

  • … but overtaken by AMD

And why not the Intel Core i9 10900K?

This is undoubtedly one — if not the — of the best processors available on the market and released in 2020. Intel does not intend to lead competition on the number of cores: The datasheet remains relatively classic on this side, with 10 cores ( 20 threads thanks to HyperThreading). However, in fact, the prowess of this CPU is exceptional. With its base frequency of 3.70 GHz, the i9 impresses mainly with its turbo mode, which allows you to reach 5.30 GHzwith ease. Its 20 MB cache memory is welcome and allows you to launch a number of usual and greedy applications in record time. And despite all the power it shows, its TDP remains perfectly controlled, at 125 W .

Still, we do not put it in our recommendations for this graphics card from Nvidia. Although the performance is excellent, the price remains high. This, especially since it is not necessarily justified, as the comparison with the R9 5900X of AMD demonstrates this to us. Moreover, this version specifically requires a change of the socket (LGA1200), which means that you will have to additionally invest in a new motherboard. Finally, it further reveals its potential on even more advanced GPUs. For this purpose, we invite you to find the best processors for the RTX3090 .
